A E Jones Communion Set £1495

Large Sterling Silver portable communion set. One of the finest sets we have ever had. All pieces fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1964. Maker A E Jones. Excellent condition. This set has had little use. Case lined in red velvet.

Approximate measurements are; CHALICE 13cm high, base 10.5cm diameter, bowl 9cm diameter and 5cm deep. PATEN 12.5cm diameter. PYX 5cm diameter and 3cm deep. CRUETS 11.5cm high. SPOON 11cm length. CASE 28.5 x 22.5 x 15 high.

The chalice with engraved cross is guilded inside the cup and the pyx with engraved cross is also guilded inside. The cruets are crystal with sterling silver mounts and lids. All pieces in the set are hallmarked.

Polished Brass Communion Set

This communion set represents great value for money. Polished brass takes no more cleaning and care than sterling silver, silver plate or gold plate. In fact brass is easier to clean than silver plate and gold plate. The more you clean it the better the finish. You cannot rub off the finish because it is solid brass. I remember when I was in the Boys’ Brigade and part of my uniform was a leather belt with a brass buckle. Length of service was recognised by those who had the shiniest buckle. My point is that brass improves over time if cleaned correctly. Plated items will deteriorate over time. Note: Wine should not be left in a brass cruet or chalice any longer than necessary as it may react with the brass. If the wine stains the brass then this will simply polish out.

Stunning Victorian silver communion set by Henry Wilkinson & Co 1875. Comprises chalice, paten, jug. Original case. Very decorative and rare set. This communion set is in very good condition and is fully functional. New cork fitted to jug.

Chalice measures 9cm high and the bowl 4.5cm diameter. Engraved with IHS and sunburst and on the other side engraved Alpha & Omega and makers markers are stamped. Jug measures 10.5cm high and about 5.5cm diameter at widest point. Engraved IHS and sunburst and Alpha & Omega. Makers marks are stamped. Standing paten measures 8cm diameter. Engraved IHS and sunburst. On the base the makers marks are stamped. Engraved dedication on base to Rev C.C. Carter B.A. 1875.

Silver Portable Communion Sets

The current economic climate has seen silver prices go through the roof and it seems that everyone is after a secondhand silver communion set. Many sets never make it to market because they are passed on and a shortage has pushed prices up by 30-40% over the last 2 years.

It is unlikely that prices of silver communion sets will fall so our advice is do your research and be careful of sellers who are exploiting the situation. There are some sets for sale that are heavily inflated and waiting for some inexperienced purchaser. There are also sets that seem to slip through the net and if you are lucky can catch it at the right price.

The worst time to buy a sterling silver communion set is near Ordinations, for the obvious reason that they make desirable gifts and therefore prices increase. The best time to buy is probably January, February and March. It’s not all doom and gloom though. Buy right and your set will increase in value over the years. Good luck.

Communion Set Care

This might sound like a no brainer but actually we do get asked a lot about care and maintenance of a silver plated or sterling silver communion set. It is not a stupid question as the wrong care will certainly reduce the life of a set.

Silver plated communion sets need to be cleaned with warm soapy water before and after each use, especially the chalice and cruet as they contained wine. Dry and then a simple buff with a microfiber cloth is normally ample. A common mistake is to leave wine in the cruet. Do not as this will attack the metal or glass. Occasionally the silver plating will need polishing. We recommend Goddard’s long term silver polish. Follow their instructions. A microfiber duster is always good for the final polish!

Important Note: Never use polish on gilding (gold) as it will damage or remove it. Wash with warm soapy water, dry, polish with soft cloth.

Sterling silver communion sets are cared for like above. They are made from solid silver so stronger silver cleaners can be used and you can polish that much harder. You cannot rub the silver off! This does not apply to gilded sterling silver.

We now sell brass communion sets. The finish is not lacquered but simply polished. The more you polish the better the shine and colour of the brass. Use a liquid or wadding brass cleaner and follow their instructions. Buff with a microfiber cloth for a highly polished finish. Polish at least once a month to keep in good condition. Contrary to belief brass sets are really easy to keep clean and looking good.

All communion sets should be kept clean and hygienic. Remember to wash surfaces that come into contact with water, wine and bread with warm soapy water and rinse clean. Dry and then buff with a soft cloth. Do this before and after use.

Communion set cases can simply be cleaned with furniture polish like Mr Sheen. If the case has lost colour then try shoe polish.

Enjoy your communion set. I find cleaning silver or brass quite therapeutic, especially with a nice cup of coffee.
